If you’re a movie fan, you are undoubtedly looking forward to anything mastermind director Luca Guadagnino has a hand in. The talented Italian filmmaker is known for his movies exploring emotional connection, sexuality, and erotica with overwhelmingly beautiful visuals. His work includes “Call Me By Your Name,” “Bones and All,” and “Challengers.” Guadagnino’s films have featured stars such as Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya. “Queer,” Guadagnino’s newest tearjerker, has generated buzz for its casting of James Bond veteran Daniel Craig and “Outerbanks” star Drew Starkey in his first cinematic role.
William Burroughs’ 1985 novella inspired the film. It follows Lee, played by Daniel Craig, after he fled from a drug bust in New Orleans. He finds himself in Mexico City in the 1940s, where he meets a young American Navy serviceman named Allerton, played by Drew Starkey. Lee becomes quickly obsessed with Allerton, and the book follows their story. After my obsession with ‘Call Me By Your Name,’ I could not be more excited for another close proximity, queer love story.
Though Guadagnino couldn’t relate to its content, he shared that “Queer” deeply moved him. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he commented on his work for the film. “I am a gentleman who goes to sleep very early, never take drugs in my life, never smoke a cigarette, and I am gone into a diet, and I lost 15 kilos,” Guadagnino said. “So I’m quite rigorous about my addictions. I can count on two hands the lovers I had in my life.” However, after reading the book, he told Vulture, “The second I stepped into the world of Burroughs, I was changed.”
When will it be released?
I’m not sure about you, but if you’ve been following when you can watch the film, you’ll agree it’s a bit confusing.
Guadagnino’s movie debuted at the 81st Venice International Film Festival on September 3, 2024. It then had a limited release in the United States on November 27. If everything goes to plan, the movie will be available nationwide on December 13.
However, sadly “Queer” won’t be available globally for quite a while. The UK has yet to set a release date for the film, and it won’t be available to Italian audiences until February 13, 2025.
